Aymara-Quechua Textiles are the most traditional and authentic Andean-Bolivian crafts that we have. These textiles are made by skilled weavers from the Aymara and Quechua communities where the ancestral culture is kept alive. Communities have rescued techniques of weaving, iconography, and the use of natural dyes to make these textiles that are unique because they represent each of our life experiences.
We are in the Avaroa Province of the Department of Oruro, an area of extreme poverty but rich in textile art. We are many groups and could be many more because all the indigenous women know weaving and have learned to dye with herbs. Ayni Bolivia has taught us to combine colors and improve quality in order to sell better.
It is essential for us to be able to sell our textiles to support our families. Due to drought, we are not sure if we will have enough to eat. Our weavings are our hope to improve the life, health and education of our children within the community, and to improve our homes and gain access to water and electricity.
